Let's Build Some Cheap and Easy Kitchen Cabinets and Appliances

All three of these kitchen pieces are made from the little wooden tea
boxes that you can buy at the Dollar Store.

They are very simple and to make, and can be completed in only a few hours.

I look everywhere for mini lumber and building materials, not just at the hobby shop.

The little tea bag boxes cost only a dollar.
I don't actually drink the tea :-), I just buy them for the cheap wooden boxes.

The crates from tangerines are free and are made of great mini lumber. They are tricky to get apart, and need some sanding, but hey, the price is right.

This is all the wood I used to make the kitchen cabinet, stove and refrigerator.

If you don't have an old tangerine box, any thin wood is acceptable. If you don't have any way to saw the wood, use balsa wood, which is easy to cut with a knife.

The first thing we need to do, is peel off the labels and sand the box front.

Take out the sliding top and glue it to the bottom of the box, this will raise the cabinet up from the floor, like real cabinets.

I forgot to do that for a picture, and added it after I painted.

These are all of the pieces you need to make the cupboard.

You can use any thin wood for these pieces. If you don't have a way to saw the wood, use balsa wood.

  • the box
  • two tiny pieces to fill in the end of the box, ( see pic. 4)
  • 3 cupboard doors, 1 3/8 inches x 2 3/8 inches
  • the counter top 5 inches x 2 1/8 inches

Glue the tiny pieces to the end of the box to fill in the gap.

Glue a piece of card stock over each end of the box to cover the joins and all that lettering.

I used a plastic butter pat container for the sink, I wanted a rectangular shape, but I couldn't find anything. This container was already white, but most of the ''sinks'' I use are from packaging and start out transparent. You can spray most plastics with a primer to make them 'paintable' for acrylic paint.

We need to cut a hole in the countertop for the sink.

To do this, draw a shape a little bit larger than the bottom of the sink, but small enough so that the sink won't fall through.
Drill a lot of holes all around the edge of where you want the hole, then 'chisel' out the last little bits with a screwdriver and hammer. Sand the edges of the hole.

The sink drops into the counter top like this.

Sand the little doors, fill in any holes or splintered edges with polyfilla, or anything that you would use to fill in holes in walls. This will ensure a smooth finish.

I have had problems in the past when I simply glued on the bead door handles, one of them always got knocked off eventually. Now I like to poke a tiny hole in the door where the handle is to go, then when I apply the bead handle, I thread a piece of wire through the bead and into the hole. I use glue here also.
It is best to make the hole before you glue the doors on to the box.

To make the hole I use a strong darning needle, just tap it with a hammer.

Glue on the doors and paint the cabinet and counter top. That's it!

Just glue on the counter top after everything is painted.

Here is a good view of the sink. The taps are made from a small piece of wood for the base and jewelry bits, see pic. 11

The kitchen cabinet looks pretty good once you add a few accessories. It looks as if someone is about to make a salad, and there are carrots cooking on the stove. I'll just bet there is a roast in the oven.

There are all sorts of bits and pieces that you can use for handles, taps, faucets etc.

Making the Kitchen Appliances

To make the stove, you have to cut down the tea box to the same height as the kitchen cabinet.

To do this you will have to use a saw and miter box. I slid the lid out and held the whole box in the miter box and sawed it. These tea boxes can be pulled apart quite easily, so you can cut it piece by piece if you like, then just glue it back together.

After it is cut the correct size, you need to add an oven door and drawer, also add a a piece on the top.

I glued on a couple of strips of paper to the box, to cover up those ugly cracks. Actually I forgot to take a photo of this before I painted the stove, I Photoshopped it in here just to show you.

Glue a small piece of wood for the back of the stove top.

Then paint the stove

Here is a side view of the stove.

After the paint was dry on the stove, I sprayed it with a glossy all-purpose spray to give it a shine.

I used these 1/2 inch domes/press studs for the stove top burners. I used the flat part of the dome.

I had to drill a little hole or indent for the centre of the dome to sink into.

I used earring backs for the knobs at the back of the stove.

I realized while I was shopping for domes, that sewing supplies have great packaging for making tiny sinks. By this time, I already had the kitchen cabinets made, .....but next time, I will know where to look.

The burners look great, you can use washers or anything else you might find, but the domes cost only $1 for 4 and I like the way they look.

The handles on the oven door and the drawer come from pen clips.

When I was hunting for something else, I came across one of those little plastic things that cover the throwaway ladies razors. It slid nicely onto the top of the stove. I fancied that it kinda, sorta looks a bit like a light, like the old stoves used to have.

I always have a tea towel hanging on my oven door, so I put one here too.

I don't think anyone really needs directions to make the refrigerator.

I will simply say that I covered the sides and top of the tea box with card stock, to cover all the cracks, painted and then sprayed with a glossy all-purpose spray.

The handle of the refrigerator is a pen clip.
